GOOD Music is an American record label and creative collective founded by Kanye West in 2004, shortly after the release of his breakthrough debut album, The College Dropout. The name was originally stylised as G.O.O.D. Music, with GOOD standing for Getting Out Our Dreams. Created as a joint venture with Sony BMG, the label became an important platform for hip-hop, R&B and artists willing to move between traditional genre boundaries.
West founded the company while establishing himself as both a successful rapper and one of his generation’s most influential producers. Rather than concentrating solely on his own recordings, he used GOOD Music to develop other performers and bring together singers, rappers, songwriters and producers.
Among the earliest signings were John Legend and Common. Legend’s Get Lifted became the label’s first album release in 2004 and went on to win three Grammy Awards. Common followed with the acclaimed Be in 2005, an album that received four Grammy nominations. These releases quickly established the label as considerably more than a vehicle for West’s own music.
Over the following years, GOOD Music assembled an impressive collection of talent. Artists associated with the label included Big Sean, Kid Cudi, Pusha T, Teyana Taylor, Mos Def (Yasiin Bey), Desiigner, 070 Shake, D’banj, Consequence and Mr Hudson. Its production network also featured notable names including Q-Tip, No I.D., Jeff Bhasker, Hudson Mohawke and Travis Scott.
In 2011, the company entered a long-term label agreement with Def Jam, and the following year released the collaborative album Cruel Summer. The project demonstrated the collective approach behind GOOD Music, bringing together artists and affiliates rather than focusing on a single performer.
Another important change came in 2015 when Kanye West appointed Pusha T as president of the label.
Although its roster and industry relationships changed considerably over subsequent years, GOOD Music left a substantial mark on twenty-first-century hip-hop and R&B. Its history brought together established stars and emerging talent, helping launch or develop several major careers while creating some of the most recognisable rap and R&B releases of its era.
