OVO Sounds
OVO Sounds is a Toronto-based record label that has become one of the most influential imprints in modern hip-hop and R&B. Founded in 2012, OVO Sounds grew out of the creative ecosystem surrounding Drake and his long-running OVO (October’s Very Own) brand, which began as a blog and lifestyle platform before evolving into a fully fledged cultural movement.
The label was co-founded by Aubrey Drake Graham (Drake), along with longtime collaborators Noah “40” Shebib and Oliver El-Khatib. While Drake serves as the global face of OVO Sounds, the label’s identity is deeply shaped by 40’s minimalist, atmospheric production style and Oliver’s curatorial vision. Together, they established OVO Sounds as a home for emotionally restrained, late-night music that prioritises mood, texture, and introspection over excess.
From the beginning, OVO Sounds positioned itself differently from traditional rap labels. Rather than chasing volume or trends, it focused on a carefully selected roster of artists who shared a similar emotional and sonic sensibility. This approach allowed OVO Sounds to build a recognisable sound — moody, polished, and reflective — that aligns closely with Drake’s own artistic evolution.
Notable artists who have been signed to or closely associated with OVO Sounds include PARTYNEXTDOOR, whose fusion of R&B and atmospheric production helped define the label’s early identity; Majid Al Maskati and Jordan Ullman (Majid Jordan), known for their smooth, synth-driven sound; Roy Woods, whose melodic approach blurred the lines between rap and R&B; and dvsn, whose emotionally rich, slow-burn style further cemented the label’s reputation for intimacy and restraint. Over time, OVO Sounds has also collaborated with and platformed producers and artists who reflect its understated aesthetic, even when not formally signed.
Beyond releases, OVO Sounds operates as a cultural hub. Its annual OVO Sound Radio broadcasts, fashion collaborations, and Toronto-centric identity have helped reinforce the label’s sense of place and community. Rather than functioning solely as a business entity, OVO Sounds represents a philosophy: success without noise, confidence without spectacle, and emotional honesty without overexplanation.
In the context of modern music, OVO Sounds stands as a label that values cohesion over scale. Its influence can be heard not just in chart positions, but in how contemporary hip-hop and R&B embrace space, vulnerability, and atmosphere — a legacy rooted firmly in Drake’s vision and carried forward by the artists who share it.
“Search & Rescue” isn’t about saving someone or being saved — it’s about choosing connection with clarity, offering presence without pressure, and letting desire exist without obligation.
“Hotline Bling” isn’t really about jealousy or control — it’s about the quiet discomfort of realising that someone who once needed you no longer does, and learning to sit with that change.
“God’s Plan” isn’t a victory lap or a sermon — it’s Drake quietly reframing pressure, success, and opposition into purpose, resilience, and emotional control.
“One Dance” isn’t about falling in love — it’s about pausing in the moment, where desire, repetition, and emotional restraint quietly collide beneath a hypnotic, global rhythm.
