BMG
BMG (Bertelsmann Music Group) is one of the most influential names in the global music industry, known for both its historic record label operations and its modern role as a major music rights company. The story of BMG begins with the German media conglomerate Bertelsmann, which traces its origins back to 1835, when it was founded by Carl Bertelsmann in the town of Gütersloh, Germany. Originally established as a publishing company focused on religious literature, Bertelsmann gradually expanded into broader media and entertainment sectors, eventually laying the foundation for what would become BMG.
The BMG brand itself emerged in 1987, when Bertelsmann merged its music interests with RCA Records after acquiring RCA from General Electric. This created Bertelsmann Music Group, commonly known as BMG, which quickly became one of the largest music companies in the world. During the 1990s and early 2000s, BMG was considered one of the “big five” record companies, alongside industry giants such as Sony, Universal, EMI, and Warner.
Under the BMG umbrella, several famous labels operated, including RCA Records, Arista Records, Jive Records, and LaFace Records. Through these labels, BMG helped launch and support many iconic artists across multiple genres. Some of the most notable names associated with BMG include Elvis Presley, whose legendary recordings were released through RCA; Whitney Houston, one of the best-selling vocalists of all time; and Britney Spears, who became a defining pop star of the late 1990s and early 2000s through Jive Records. Other influential artists connected with BMG include Christina Aguilera, Foo Fighters, OutKast, and Alicia Keys.
In 2004, BMG merged its recorded music division with Sony Music Entertainment to form Sony BMG, one of the largest music companies of the time. However, Bertelsmann later sold its share and refocused on building a new model for music rights management. The modern BMG company was relaunched in 2008 as a music publishing and rights management organisation, emphasising transparency and fair partnerships with artists and songwriters.
Today, BMG represents thousands of musicians, songwriters, and catalogues worldwide. While the structure of the company has evolved significantly, BMG remains a powerful force in the music business, continuing the legacy of innovation and artist support that began with Carl Bertelsmann’s publishing venture nearly two centuries ago.
