Cherry Red Records

Cherry Red Records is a British independent record label founded in 1978 by music entrepreneur Iain McNay, working alongside Richard Jones. Established in Malvern, Worcestershire, during the explosion of punk rock, the company developed a reputation for supporting unconventional artists and musical styles often overlooked by major record companies.

Its origins can be traced to McNay’s involvement in promoting rock concerts during the early 1970s. The label took its name from Cherry Red, a song by British blues-rock band The Groundhogs. Its first single, Bad Hearts by The Tights, appeared in June 1978.

Under McNay’s leadership, Cherry Red Records became an important part of Britain’s independent music movement. Notable early artists included Dead Kennedys, The Monochrome Set, Felt, Eyeless in Gaza, Tracey Thorn and Ben Watt, the latter two subsequently achieving international success as Everything But The Girl.

The label also gained recognition for its influential 1982 compilation album Pillows & Prayers, which introduced listeners to a diverse collection of independent artists at an unusually affordable price.

As the music industry evolved, Cherry Red expanded into specialist reissues, archival recordings and catalogue preservation. Its associated labels and releases have featured artists including Hawkwind, Kim Wilde, Howard Jones, The Fall, Dinosaur Jr., The Residents and Van Der Graaf Generator.

Today, Cherry Red Records remains an important name in independent music, spanning punk, alternative rock, progressive rock, pop and numerous other genres.
